The Sacraments - some light relief...!

The sacraments gets another airing at theRubicon (here).

Grant brings some light relief to the debate by pointing to this video for reasons not to change the SA position. The infant baptism is my favourite - as I am not sure who was baptising who!

It is a very sad reflection that again people belonging to The Salvation Army have posted many comments not just on the stated site but also on the UK and International site, choosing to comment quite heavily on the fact that there are many Christians - more than not - who find this form very helpful - whether in formal ritual, or through a simply remembrance of Christ in the way He outlined it for His People. I find 'Salvationists' are divided in this matter, and pray that whilst they may chose not to partake or practise, that they would have the 'Holy character' of Christ to recognise that it is not sinful to do so, and the majority do not have a problem with it.

I understand there are some corps who allow 'soldiers' to partake of this - is this right?

I'm not usually comfortable with replying to anon comments - but in this case I have appreciated the opportunity....

I'm not sure whether it is a sad reflection or rather the reality of a sense of a tension between those who:-

a) see TSA sacramental expression as a mark of essential identity of salvationism

b)see TSA sacramental expression as part of TSA as a prophetic voice

c) see TSA sacramental expression as disobedience

d) those who adhere to TSA sacramental expression but would use symbolism as just that merely symbolism. Emphasising throughout that inward grace is what counts.

You are right - what perhaps is unhealthy is the anger and sense of judgement that underlies much of the current debate. I have to admit never hearing anyone saying it was sinful to partake tho?

on a more serious note...I have never heard anyone say it was sinful to partake and I have been in TSA for 40 years and have heard all sides.

My favourite was the priest dropping the waffer down the brides front and then trying to fish it out with his hand.

The only way that wouldn't happen if the army went for communion would be everyone going back into upright collars.

Thanks for pointing to Chick's writing. As I've mentioned in the past this is something that was part of my decision to move on.

I think the really sad thing is that so many salvos have never really come to understand the TSAs position on the sacraments, which informs their subsequent spiritual 'snobbery'!

What is also sad is the inability at times to see how whilst rejecting 'traditional' forms if sacrament the Army has created it's own - uniform, the mercy seat, the flag, dedication, brass bands (kidding on the last one!).
