Lectio Divina - Luke 10:38-42 (NRSV)

Lectio -Read the passage slowly several times.

Meditatio - Reflect on the text of the passage, thinking about how to apply to one's own life.

Oratio - Respond to the passage by opening the heart to God.

Contemplatio - Opening our mind, heart and soul to the influence of God.












Proper 11, Year C

Take time to read through the account slowly- possibly 2 or 3 times, then...
  • Identify what 'shimmers' for you?
  • Where is your focus drawn in the account ?
  • What for you is the main point?
  • What is your point of contemplation?
  • Which word or phrase has touched your heart?
  • What have you "heard" or "seen"?
Only one rule - remember that this isn't a bible study more a place of contemplation of scripture, so read comments with respect and be released from needing to respond to someone else's comment.
Jesus visits Mary and Martha

Now as they went on their way, he entered a certain village, where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to what he was saying. But Martha was distracted by her many tasks; so she came to him and asked, ‘Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her then to help me.’ But the Lord answered her, ‘Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; there is need of only one thing.Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her.’

Maybe because I have been thinking about a future sermon on the subject I'm drawn to Jesus' words "... you are worried and distracted by many things; there is need of only one thing."

For me I feel the Lord is reminding us that if we concentrate on being at the feet of Jesus the work He requires us to do will become easier, simply because He is our sole focus.

Along the world famous Oxford street in London's Westend; nestled in among the classy frontage of designer shops there is almost an unnoticeable, unimpressive wooden door. It is more or less alongside The Regent Hall's main entrance onto the busyness of Oxford Street. People pass the wooden door oblivious to the equally unimpressive wooden steps that go up three storey's to what was Regent Hall's youth club. When I was 10 I played on these bare wooden steps totally unaware of the significance behind and upon which I played.
